Step Six: Duplicate the merged
layer using Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J),
and move this new duplicate to the
far right half of the canvas (again,
hold down Shift to keep it aligned
until it snaps into place). Then press
Command-E (PC: Ctrl-E) to merge
this layer with the previous one so
now you have a full canvas layer
that has the fibers creating a rough
“W” shape. Press Command-; (PC:
Ctrl-;) to hide the guides.

Step Seven: Go to Filter>Convert
for Smart Filters to change the layer
into a smart object. Then, go to
Filter>Filter Gallery. In the Artistic
set, select the Plastic Wrap filter,
and set the Highlight Strength to
15, Detail to 9, and Smoothness to

  1. Click OK to apply the filter. Now
that we have the base texture for
our effect, it’s time to start working
    with some color!

Step Eight: Go to Layer>New
Adjustment Layer>Gradient Map
and click OK. In the Properties panel
(Window >Properties) click on the
gradient bar to open the Gradient
Editor. Click on the left color stop
below the gradient ramp to make it
active, set its Location at 18%, click
on the Color swatch, set the color
to a dark blue (#0b00b4), and click
OK to close the Color Picker. Set the
far right color stop with a Location
of 100% to the same color. Click
below the gradient ramp to add
a stop at 63% set to a bright pink
(#f f0064), and then add one more at
a Location of 81% set to a pale blue
(#adceff). Click OK to exit the Gra-
dient Editor and observe how the
layer is colorizing the texture. The
darkest and lightest colors are turned
to blue while the midtone grays are
turned pink and light blue. That’s
the power of the Gradient Map!
