› › HOW TO

Step Nine: Add another Gradient Map
adjustment layer and edit the gradient
again to have three color stops with the
following properties: 30% and green
(#00601b), 63% and orange (#fd7c00),
and 100% and yellow (#fff10c). After
creating the custom gradient, click on
the layer mask attached to this layer in
the Layers panel. Switch to the Gradi-
ent tool (G); click on the down-facing
arrow next to the gradient thumbnail in
the Options Bar to open the Gradient
Picker; and select the Black, White gradi-
ent. Then select the Linear Gradient icon
in the Options Bar.
Draw a vertical gradient starting about
a quarter of the way down from the top of
the image to about a quarter of the way
from bottom of the image to fade out the
color effect as it goes upward, revealing
the blue and red Gradient Map on the
layer below. Switch to the Brush tool (B)
and use a large soft brush with white
(press D) to paint on the mask to reapply
the yellow and green color effect at the
top center of the “W.” Set the Opacity
for the Brush to 25% in the Options Bar,
press X to set the Foreground color to
black, and then paint in the bottom-left,
-middle, and -right to reveal some of the
blue and red colors below.

Step 10: Add another Gradient Map
adjustment layer, and add four color
stops with these settings: 0% and dark
purple (#080712), 24% and light pur-
ple (#928bff), 55% and electric blue
(#1708fc), and 80% and bright aqua
(#00eaff ). Set the blending mode to
Overlay in the Layers panel.
Click on the attached layer mask and
press Command-I (PC: Ctrl-I) to invert the
mask to black and hide the color effect.
Use a large soft brush set to around 70%
Opacity and white paint to reapply the
effect at the inside “points” of the “W”
and the bottom corners as shown. Paint
multiple strokes over areas where you
want to build up the effect.
