Step 18: Click on the W-shaped fibers
layer in the Layers panel to make it the
active layer. Then go to Layer>New>Layer.
In the New Layer dialog, name the layer
“Color Adjust,” set the Mode to Soft
Light, and enable the option to Fill with
Soft-Light-Neutral-Color (50% Gray).
Clicking OK will add a gray layer that’s
invisible because of the blending mode.
Grab the Burn tool (nested under the
Dodge tool [O] in the Toolbar), set the
Exposure to 12% in the Options Bar,
and use a soft round brush to darken
the background areas directly around
the model. This helps to keep her from
getting visually lost in the very busy and
colorful background.

Hopefully, this project opens up some
fresh ideas for how to use some of the
Photoshop features that don’t often get
much play. The combination of the Fibers
filter with the multiple color Gradient
Maps makes for some very exciting pos-
sibilities. If you find a fun and interesting
application for this technique, feel free
to share it on the KelbyOne member
forums. We’d love to see it. n
