ADDING PAPER DAMAGE
You could stop there, though you can increase the
realism by adding some paper damage. Happily,
there are custom brush sets on the Internet made
for that purpose.

Step Six: To get the custom brush set used here
(51 Paper Torn Brushes by Lilith Trash), click this
link. Then, click the gray Download button (circled)
to download the brushes (the other buttons on the
page are ads, so don’t click them). Locate the ZIP
file—it should be in your Downloads folder—and
extract the brushes by double-clicking on the ZIP
file. On a PC, double-click the file, and in the File
Explorer window that opens, click Extract at the top,
then click the Extract All button near the top right.
Tip: You can also find an assortment of free and
paid brushes here.

Step Seven: Back in Photoshop, press B to grab
the Brush tool (circled), and in the Options Bar, click
on the brush thumbnail to open the Brush Preset
Picker (circled). Next, click the gear icon at the upper
right (also circled) and choose Import Brushes. In the
dialog that opens, navigate to where you saved the
.abr file—vintage-paper-torn.abr, in this case—and
then click Open.
Tip: You can also simply double-click the .abr
file to load the brush set into Photoshop.

Step Eight: Scroll down to the very bottom of the
Brush Preset Picker and expand the new folder of
brushes named vintage-paper-torn. To get a better
idea of the brush shape, click the gear icon again and
turn on Brush Tip (so it has a checkmark to its left),
then click the gear icon one more time and turn off
Brush Stroke (so it doesn’t have a checkmark to its
left). Now drag the slider at the bottom of the panel
to the right to enlarge the brush tip preview. You can
also drag the bottom-right corner of the Brush Preset
Picker outward to enlarge the panel. Locate the brush
named “2djt2ZY” and click it.
