Step 11: Use the Opacity setting at
the top of the Layers panel (circled)
to decrease the opacity of the dam-
age layer to your liking. A setting
of 75% was used here. Here’s a
before and after version.
If you’d like, you can add even
more damage using other brushes;
however, be sure to make each
brushstroke on another new layer.
That way, you can click the layer’s
Eye icon to toggle layer visibility off
and on and see which one you like
the best. You can also fine-tune the
opacity of the streaks layer.
Tip: On some images, you
may want to turn the photo into
a sepia tone first (a fancy way to
say it has a brown overlay). To
do that, click the half-black/half-
white circle at the bottom of the
Layers panel and choose Black &
White. In the Properties panel that
opens, turn on the Tint checkbox
and then lower the layer’s Opacity
until you’re happy with how it
looks. Position the Black & White
adjustment layer beneath the
streaks and damage layers.

As you can see, a few streaks com-
bined with a click of a custom
brush make the photo look believ-
ably old. Until next time, may the
creative force be with you all! n
