Again, I marked the selection
with a green stroke here, so you can
see that it’s distorted to match the
exact geometry of the wheel.

There are so many cases where this
geometric selection and transforma-
tion can be helpful. For example, not
only can you distort your selections,
but you can also switch to the Warp
mode (Edit>Transform>Warp) and
use the grid to manipulate selections
that are warped in ways that are not
only affected by perspective, but
also by the curvature or distortion of
a lens. Think about when you look
up at a building and it’s so tall you
can see it curve in the lens. That’s a
geometric form, but it’s curving over
the perspective. Once you have your
distorted angle selection, you could
then use Warp to align it to the curve.
All of these options allow you
to accurately select the geometry
of the form and not risk any influ-
ence of details from a busy scene
or pixels that are similar in tone or
hue. Give it a try and you’ll start
looking at your image selections
and how to manipulate them in a
whole new way. n
