Step Three: This simple tip is just to show you
how to lay text on an image and have the image
punch through the text. This doesn’t require clip-
ping masks; we’ll cover that elsewhere in one of
the other tutorials. This is just a simple effect that
often gets overlooked in the Layers panel.
Get the Type tool (T) from the Toolbar. Select
a big, fat bold type. Here, we’re using Amboy
Black from Adobe Fonts (Typekit). Type out the
words: “That’s one small step for man, one
giant leap for mankind” (without the quotation
marks). I’ve used white as the font color, but the
actual color won’t matter. Be sure to hit Return
(PC: Enter) after some of the words, like this:
THAT’S
ONE SMALL
STEP FOR
MAN,
ONE GIANT
LEAP FOR
MANKIND
Commit the text, then get the Move tool
(V) and position the type at the left side of the
image. Press Command-T (PC: Ctrl-T) to go into
Free Transform, then click-and-drag the frame so
the top-center point is near the top-left corner of
the document. This means, when we resize it, it
will expand from the top-left position. To resize,
just click on the bottom-right corner of the frame
and simply drag out to the required size, as shown.
You can also make some small adjustments after-
ward to position it just where you want. When it
looks good, commit the transformation.

Step Four: You should now have three layers in
the Layers panel: the background, the image, and
the type. We’ll delete the Background layer, as we
don’t need it. Next, we’re going to apply a stroke
to the text, so click on the Add a Layer Style icon
(fx) at the bottom of the panel, and select Stroke.
Then, in the Layer Style dialog, click on the Color
swatch to open the Color Picker. Sample a light
gray from Neil’s space suit and click OK. Then,
change the stroke Size to 8 px and the Position to
Outside. Go ahead and click OK.
