TUTORIAL THREE: BLOCK IT OUT
Here’s our third (and last) poster style for
another space image. This time, we’re
going to block out some of the image
using a vector mask, and add some text
in between the shapes.

Step One: Create another 12x12" docu-
ment, as before. Then, place the third
image of this set, the famous footprint!
To download it, go to this link, click the
Download button, and choose Original.
Resize the image so that the footprint
stretches almost to the center of the
frame; we’ll readjust this at the end.

Step Two: To make this easier, put the
image into a group of its own by pressing
Command-G (PC: Ctrl-G). We’re going to
apply a vector mask to this group to mask
out some of the image and make space
(excuse the pun!) for some text.

Step Three: Now, we’ll create our
first rectangle shape. To help with this lay-
out, go to View>Show>Grid to turn on the
grid, then under the Photoshop CC menu
(PC: Edit), go to Preferences >Guides,
Grid & Slices. In the Preferences dialog,
go to the Grid section, and change the
Gridline Every setting to 1 Inches and
set Subdivisions to 2. Click OK. With
the grid showing, press U to select the
Rectangle tool, and change the tool
mode menu in the Options Bar to Path.
Draw out the first rectangle at the top
of the image from the first subdivision
down to the second subdivision. You can
have multiple shapes and sizes; we’re
going to create several strips across the
image for this design.
