ARCTIC FOX

SEA OTTER

The arctic fox’s coat has two
layers: Beneath the long, out-
side hairs, there’s another
layer of soft hairs tightly
packed together. This system
traps a layer of warm air next
to the skin to keep the fox
toasty in the winter.

A sea otter’s coat is also
made up of two layers: an
inner one that traps air to
keep them warm, plus an
outer water-repellent
layer that keeps its skin
dry from the chilly ocean.

An arctic fox’s coat can
change with the weather.
In summer, their fur is
brown or gray to match
the rocky ground. In the
winter, it turns pure white
to blend in with the snow.

An arctic fox has an
impressively dense coat,
with about 130,000 hairs
per square inch. (In com-
parison, humans have only
about 100,000 hairs on
their entire head.)

To keep their coats
waterproof, otters
spend about five to
six hours each day
grooming their fur.

Sea otters have an
incredible 900,
hairs per square inch
on their coat.
