GETTOOLEDUP

Allyouneedis someyarninvariouscolours(wool,acrylic

orfluffycottonis best),a pompom-makinggadget,anda

goodpairofsharpscissors.Youcanuseanymethodto

makeyourpompoms,buta pompom-makinggadgetwill

maketheprocesseasierandmoreprecise.WeusedClover

pompommakers,whicharesturdyandeasytouse.It will

helpif youalreadyknowhowtousea pompom-making

gadget, which we showed you last issue.

COLOURYOURPOMPOMSTOCREATEALLSORTSOFEFFECTS

How do I make spots?

Creatingspotsinyourpompomsisreallysimple,

sostartbymakingthisone-spot wonder, using two

contrastingyarncolours:

Step 1 Wrapa smallamountofpinkyarnatthecentreof

onearm.Leavea longstartingtail,thenknotit totheyarn

endonceyou’vefinished,tohelpsecurethespot.

Step 2 Wrapcreamyarnoneither side of the spot and on

topofit,untilthearmis full.

Step 3 Wrapcreamyarnaroundtheotherarmandfinish

thepompomasusual– tiecreamyarnaroundthepompom

andpositiontheknotatthesidehingeof the gadget so the

spotsitsatthefrontofthepompom.

Step 4 Spruceupthepompomwitha goodtrimanda

quickwash,andit willhavea pinkspotatthefront.

Pompomfibresareprettyflexible,sotryarrangingyour

spotfibresintoa differentshape,suchastheheartwe’ve

triedhere.Tomakeanarealookbigger,fluffouttheyarn

withyourfingertips– tomakean area appear smaller,

squeezethefibrestogether.

TipDon’tbedisappointedif yourpompom’scoloursdon’t

sitperfectlystraightaway– that’snormal!Youalwaysneed

tomanipulatethefibresa bit.Differentcolourswithina

pompomwillalwaystendtolookmorelikepatchesthat

mergetogether.Positioningdifferentyarnsis notanexact

science,sosticktosimpleeffectsratherthandetailed

designs– forexample,lotsofpreciselyplacedspotsmay

notendupinexactlythepositionyouwant,whilereally

narrowstripesmayblendtogether.Don’tgiveup,though

• youmightnotgettheresultyouwantfirsttime,buta
  little trial and error can lead to exciting discoveries!
