Despite being a widowed single mother at 27, her brav
innovationssavedherhusband’sfamily’sChampagnehouse.Not
only is she credited with creating the first vintage Champagne
and revolutionising rosé (in accordance with her own taste,of
course), she also smuggled the House’s precious elixirs to the
Russians during a ban on French imports. Adding her name
to the label was another act of fearlessness. She rebranded with
her maiden name, Ponsardin, and the French word for widow:
veuve. Thereby naming the house ‘Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin.’
Her creativity, innovation and determination led her to
become one of the first businesswomen of her times, and she
instilled those attributes in her successors. To celebrate that, the
first Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award was held in 1972,
and since then, more than 340 female entrepreneurs from across
the globe have been bestowed with the honour of being included
in the ranks of greatness akin to that of Madame Clicquot.
In further tribute to la grande dame of Champagne, Veuve Clicquot is launching La Grande
Dame 2008, and for the first time in Australia, La Grande Dame Rosé 2008. The former
honours the House’s signature pinot noir-predominant style, while the latter lives up to
Madame Clicquot’s motto: “Only one quality, the finest.” Cheers. veuveclicquot.com
