THE CELL BLOCK THEATRE AT
THE NATIONAL ART SCHOOL
in Darlinghurst, Sydney, has a fascinating
history. For years it was a notorious women’s
prison and later earned a grim reputation as
the site of the last female execution in New
South Wales. Touring the abandoned site in
1957, actor Katharine Hepburn was moved to
lend her support to a plan to convert the
building into a theatre (it was, and helped
launch the careers of creatives including David
Malouf, Nick Cave and Yvonne Kenny).
Half a century later, the theatre served another
purpose: housing the 170 attendees of
BAZAAR’s 2019 Visionary Women event.
Toasting our August issue portfolio of 11
inspirational Australian women, guests enjoyed
Veuve Clicquot champagne, and caviar and
canapes courtesy of Peter Rowland, to a
soundtrack by DJ Alice Q. They then took
their seats to watch a spirited panel discussion
featuring some of the Visionary Women
(decked out in Polo Ralph Lauren): author and
commentator Clementine Ford, investigative
journalist Louise Milligan, social researcher
Dr Rebecca Huntley, artist Angela Tiatia and
model and environmentalist Laura Wells.
“We had an incredible line-up of
accomplished and inspiring women,” says
BAZAAR editor-in-chief Eugenie Kelly, who
moderated the panel. “It’s great to be able to
celebrate these women while also taking the
time to network and connect with new
people.” The event was only possible thanks to
sponsors Polo Ralph Lauren, Vida Glow, Land
Rover, Royal Copenhagen, Peter Rowland
and Veuve Clicquot. – Grace O’Neill
