As the Brexit
rollercoaster
plays havoc
with the
strength of
the pound,
Caroline Bloor
reveals simple
ways to cut
down your
holiday spend
W
hen it comes to
holidays, I’ve
always been
a bit of a planning
perfectionist, spending days (no,
weeks!) trawling the internet for the
best deals. I love the thrill of the chase
(and saving a fortune!). I know I’m
not alone: research shows that we
spend around nine days a year planning
our holidays. But once I’ve set foot
in the airport, something changes:
my holiday brain kicks in and I start
spending with abandon. However,
this year, all that is going to change.
Holiday money is usually the last
item we tick off our checklist of to-dos
before we dash out the door, but if we
all spent as much effort organising
it as we do everything else, we could
save hundreds of pounds that we can
then spend on holiday. Here’s how...
Know your limits Make
a list of things you’re going to need to spend
your money on (food, drinks, buses, taxis,
excursions, extra sun cream, souvenirs),
set a budget and then track your spending
while you’re away. Better still, money
management apps, such as Money Dashboard
and Yolt, allow you to check all your accounts
in one place. Also, write a packing list. How
many times have you had to buy things on
holiday that you already have at home?
