19 March 2022 • The Week Junior 3
O
ne of the world’s most famous shipwrecks has
been found in the chilly waters of the Southern
Ocean, off the coast of Antarctica. Endurance
was the ship used by British Imperial
Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914,
which was led by explorer Ernest
Shackleton. The plan was to
make the first crossing of
Antarctica on foot.
The expedition failed when
the ship got trapped in ice for
months before the ice crushed
it and it sank in 1915. Shackleton
and five of the crew set off on an
almost impossible mission, crossing 800
miles of stormy seas in a small boat to find help on the
island of South Georgia. Shackleton and two others
returned to Antarctica to rescue the rest of his men.
The captain of the Endurance, Frank Worsley,
kept a record of where the ship was last seen but
expeditions couldn’t find it because of thick
sea ice. This year’s Endurance
mission, run by the Falklands
Maritime Heritage Trust, found
fairly ice-free seas. This meant
that robot submarines could be
lowered into the water to scour
the sea bed, which lies about
3,000 metres deep. The wreck
was found four miles south of
its last charted position. Images
taken by the robot subs showed that
the ship is in good condition and many
sea creatures have made it their home. Mensun
Bound, from the Endurance22 mission, said it was “by
far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen.”
IT’S AN AMAZING WEEK FOR...
A YOUNG CAMPAIGNER
Seven-year-old Callum Isted, from West
Lothian, Scotland, has become the youngest
person to present a petition to the Scottish
parliament. On 9 March, Callum met First
Minister Nicola Sturgeon to discuss reducing
the number of single-use plastic bottles by
giving school pupils reusable water bottles.

HUNGRY ELEPHANTS
More than 60 elephants were treated to
a two-tonne buffet of fruits and vegetables
in Chonburi province, Thailand. Every year
on 13 March, Thailand holds its National
Elephant Day and the animals are celebrated
as a source of national pride.
A BABY RHINO NAMED “QUEENIE”
A baby white rhinoceros calf has been named
Queenie to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum
Jubilee. This year marks 70 years since the
Queen’s accession to the throne. Reggie
Heyworth, from the Cotswold Wildlife Park in
Oxfordshire, England, where the white rhino
was born, said Queenie is the “perfect name
for a young lady rhino”.

O
n 11 March, Gabriel Boric, the youngest president
in Chile’s history, was officially sworn into office.
Boric, who is 36 years old, defeated José Antonio Kast
in last year’s election. Speaking at his inauguration
(swearing-in ceremony), Boric said, “I will always
listen to the proposals of those who think differently
from us. I promise to be a president for all Chileans.”
The ceremony was attended by representatives
from each of Chile’s indigenous groups. Indigenous
people are the descendants of those who lived
somewhere before another culture arrived and took
over. This was the first time that a representative
from each indigenous group had been invited to
a presidential inauguration.
Boric has also made history by naming the
country’s first majority-female cabinet. The cabinet is
a group of senior politicians, known as ministers, who
run the government. There are 14 women and 10
men in Boric’s cabinet. One of his priorities is to hold a
referendum (public vote) on a new constitution –
a set of rules on which a country bases its laws.
