Create a perfect pet portrait

ets are valuable members of our family, so we’re likely

to take as many pictures of them as we do our kids.

However, it can be a challenge to capture a decent

picture of our unpredictable pet. By the time you’ve summoned

the Camera app on your iPhone and tapped the shutter button,

you may have missed the chance to capture the perfect pet

moment. If you shoot with a DSLR then you may not have time

to choose the best camera settings to capture accurate colours

and tones. You may also have composition problems such as a

titled horizon. So, when it comes to pets you need to shoot first

and fix any problems later. Fortunately the Photos app has all the

tools that you’ll require to create a better looking pet portrait.

By selectively darkening

the blues and cyans we

can darken the sky and

make the lighter clouds

pop out more in contrast.

Adjust

composition

Click on this button to

recompose your photo. We

rotated our seaside snap to

straighten the tilted horizon.

We also cropped to zoom in

on the dog to make her more

prominent in the frame.

The Definition slider

increases midtone

contrast. This helps

emphasise the delicate

details in our pet’s fur. It

also helps the washed-out

tones in the sky and ocean

pop out more clearly.

White balance

Our original shot suffered from a

cold blue colour cast. By using

this eyedropper tool we can

sample an area that should be

a neutral white. Photos warms

up the sampled area to lose the

blues and creates more accurate

colours throughout the shot.

Find photos faster

Photos analyses imported shots to

identify particular people or pets. To

find pictures of pets quickly type a

word such as ‘dog’ into the search

field. A Dog category will appear with

multiple pooch pictures. Click on it to

scroll through thumbnails of your pet

pictures. You may find a few cat shots

have slipped through the net too!
