Different cameras use unique raw file formats. Our .CR2 file is from a Canon.
The Photos app can read raw files from a host of different manufacturers.

Step-by-step Produce better pet portraits

1

Shooting modes
To capture a shot that features your entire
pet in the frame try shooting in your Camera
app’s burst mode. Just hold the shutter button
as the pet races by to snap a series of shots.

2

Pick a picture
In Photos go to Bursts. Double-click on a
burst stack. Click ‘Make a Selection’. Tick the
circle by the best shot. Click ‘Done’. A separate
copy of the chosen photo will appear in Photos.

3

Import photo
Choose File>Import. Browse to our Pet
Portrait.CR2 file. Click ‘Review for Import’. Our
unprocessed Raw pet photo suffers from a cold
blue colour cast and a tilted horizon.

4

Straighten horizon
Double-click on the imported photo’s
thumbnail to maximise it. Click on Edit. Click on
the Crop button. Drag the rotate wheel to make
the tilted horizon run parallel with the guide grid.

7

Create vibrant colours
Now that we’ve removed the blue colour
cast the shot looks more natural, though the
colours are drab. Go to Color and drag the
Saturation slider up to 0.65.

5

Zoom in
Set Aspect Ratio to Original to keep the
shot the same shape as other photos from your
camera. Drag the corner handles to lose some
of the edges and zoom in on the dog.

8

More impact
The pet’s coat features lots of texture and
detail. By pushing the Definition panel’s Amount
slider up to 0.30 you can boost midtone
contrast and make delicate details pop out.

6

Banish the blues
Click on the Adjust button. Go to White
Balance. Set the dropdown to Temperature/
Tint. Click the dropper on a patch of fur that
should be white to warm up the cold shot.

9

Enhance the sky
Go to Selective Colour. Click on the blue
swatch. Drag Luminance left to -40 to darken
the blues in the sky. Increase Saturation to 40.
Do the same for the cyan swatch.
