Final Cut Pro X

Create a surreal title sequence

A

n effective title sequence should grab your audience’s
attention and give them a flavour of what your
programme is about. In the title sequence of Netflix’s
time travelling thriller Dark, kaleidoscopic effects are used to
turn ordinary footage into a montage of disturbing imagery.
Traditionally a kaleidoscope was a child’s toy that used a
cardboard tube and a series of mirrors to create repetitive
patterns. By applying a kaleidoscopic video effect to clips of
people you can create nightmarish organic shapes. Architecture
under a kaleidoscopic lens produces striking ambient shapes
that can add interest and texture to your projects. In this
walkthrough we’ll demonstrate how to add creative reflective

Creating a kaleidoscopic intro sequence for your movies is
a great way to capture and entrance your audience...

Choose a workspace
When working with effects in Final Cut Pro
it’s worth choosing a suitable workspace.
After adding clips to the timeline go to
Window>Workspaces>Color & Effects. This gives
you easy access to the Effects browser where you
can choose an effect. It also displays the Video
Inspector where you can modify the look produced
by the chosen effect.
