You only need to manually set a keyframe once. When you move the
playhead and change a value a new keyframe will be added automatically.

Step-by-step Create kaleidoscopic effects

1

Import footage
Choose File>New Event. Label it
‘Kaleidoscope Event’. Click ‘OK’. Choose File>
Import Media. Browse to select our supplied
start clips. Drag Mirror_source to the timeline.

2

Add mirror effect
Choose Window>Show in Workspace>
Effects or choose the Color & Effects
workspace. Go to the Distortion category and
drag Mirror onto the timeline clip.

3

Merging landscapes
Play the clip to view the effect. Our clip
pans right. Thanks to the mirror effect, objects
such as rocks and hills merge together like the
distorted city scapes in the movie, Inception.

4

Add Kaleidoscope
Add Tunnel_source to the timeline. In the
Effects browser go to the Tiling category and
drag Kaleidoscope onto the clip. By default this
produces a sci-fi-style tunnel look.

7

Add a keyframe
Scrub to the first frame of Landscape_
Source. In the Inspector’s Kaleidoscope panel
set Offset angle to 0 degrees. Click the ‘Add a
keyframe’ icon. It will turn orange.

5

Modify the effect
Go to the Kaleidoscope panel in the Video
Inspector. Change the Offset angle to 1 degree.
Reduce the segment angle to 18.3 degrees for
a rounder looking tunnel.

8

Animate the effect
Scrub to the last frame of the clip. Set
the Offset Angle to 25 degrees. This will
automatically add a second keyframe that
causes the angle to rotate as the clip plays.

6

Add third clip
Drag Landscape_source into the timeline.
Add the Kaleidoscope effect to it. Play the clip.
By default this merges the single human figure
and landscape into surreal circular shapes.

9

Add a transition
Select Option+Cmd+5 for the Transitions
browser. From the Replicator category drag the
Vertigo transition between the clips. The circular
shape echoes the kaleidoscopic patterns.
