Create your own Track

Icons in Logic Pro X

L

ogic’s track icons are the little pictures that appear in the
track header next to the track name, denoting different
instrument types, audio waveforms or sound effects. You
might be forgiven for dismissing them as mere cosmetic window
dressing, but if your project’s track count runs high, they can
be a valuable visual aid for keeping track of what’s where in a
long list of tracks. Logic already includes a selection of icons to
choose from, but what if your needs are a little more specific?
Luckily, adding your own custom icons to the palette is pretty
easy, and once you’ve created one, it gets stored in the icon
gallerysoit canbeusedin anyprojectthereafter.Solet’sgetthe

ones that ship with Logic.
Their size changes when you

they’re assigned to.

Plan B
Another way to import and
use a custom icon is to click
the Plus button top-left,
browse to the location of the
image file, select the file and
click ‘Open’.

Use an
alternative route
You can also change the
track icon by selecting a
track, clicking the track
icon that appears in the
Track inspector, then
choosing a new icon from
the Icon palette.

Any custom icons that you create will be stored in a gallery
so that they can be used in any project thereafter...

As it appens
Another great idea is to use actual app
icons as custom icons. In the Finder,
locate an app whose icon you want
to capture and hit Command-I. In the
Get Info box, click on the icon at the
top and press Command-C. You can
then paste the copied icon directly into
Logic’s Custom Icons window for use
in your project.
