Own the Safari Favourites bar

D

o you use the Favourites bar in Safari? If you aren’t,
you are missing out on a great feature in Apple’s web
browser. It looks like an alternative place to store website
bookmarks and it can be used for that. However, it can also be
used as a menu system when the main macOS menu cannot

1

Show/hide Favourites
If the Favourites bar is not at the top of
the Safari window, go to the View menu and
show it or press Shift+Cmd+B. Remember the
shortcut and use it in full-screen mode.

2

Add top sites
When you are browsing the web and
find a page you want to save, instead of
bookmarking it, click and drag the URL to the
Favourites bar and drop it. It’s easier to access.

3

Rename favourite sites
When adding a site to the Favourites
bar, shorten the name if it is long. If there are
already long names on the bar, Ctrl+click them
and select ‘Rename’ to shorten them.

4

Add folders
The Favourites bar quickly fills up with
items. Select Bookmarks>Edit Bookmarks.
Ctrl+click Favourites and select ‘New Folder’
to organise them.

5

Organise Favourites
Folders in the Bookmarks editor become
dropdown menus on the Favourites bar. Click
and drag items in Favourites or in Bookmarks
to the folder to add them to the menu.

6

Sort alphabetically
If you are careful where sites are dropped,
you could sort items into order. However, it is
easier to get Safari to do it. Ctrl+click a folder
and select Sort By>Name.
