Automator

Step-by-step CreatenewAutomatorapps

Create new items from the Dock

H

ow many steps does it take to create a new event in
Calendar, like an appointment, and set a reminder?
Click the app in the Dock, select the calendar, find the
day, click it, and so on... Did you know you can create Calendar
events with one click and without opening Calendar? Similarly,
you can create reminders with one click, without opening
Reminders, and write emails without opening Mail.
All these one-click items and more can be created using
Automator, which is like a simple app creation tool. No
programming knowledge is needed. Automator automates
processes and it enables you to add icons to the Dock to create
new events, reminders, emails and more. It is a great way to
save time and effort.

Create Automator apps for the Dock to create new reminders, calendar events and emails
without having to open the respective apps

You can piece together automated actions like building
blocks with your Mac’s built-in Automator app...

1

Create an app
Open the Applications folder and then run
Automator. Click the button to create a new
document when asked to select one and then
choose ‘Application’ for the document type.

2

Filter new items
Select ‘Library’ in the first column and
type ‘new’ into the search box above the
second column. This filters the actions and
shows all the new items that can be created.

3

New Calendar Event
Click and drag ‘New Calendar Event’ from
the library and drop it on the right-hand side.
Click ‘Options’ and select ‘Show this action’ at
the bottom. Select the calendar to use.

4

Configure the options
All these options can be set when a new
Calendar event is created, but you can save
a bit of time and effort by setting defaults, like
alarm types and times, and calendar.

5

Save the app
Go to File>Save and enter a descriptive
name for this app, like New Calendar Event.
Save it to Applications and set the file format to
‘Application’. Click the ‘Save’ button.

6

Test the app
Close Automator and double-click the
app you created in the Applications folder.
A window like this appears. Create a new
Calendar event by selecting from the options.
