B

y default, Google keeps a lot of information about
you. The search engine giant saves your web and
app activity and it claims this improves your user
experience and search personalisations while allowing
advertisements to be more relevant.
It is, however, possible to tell Google to stop and here
we look at how you can do just that. Since Google says
this can impair your use of its services, we also look at
a new set of options which limits the amount of time the
company retains your information. If you’re concerned
about your privacy, then they’re worth checking out. You
can have Google delete activity data after three or 18
months without any extra manual intervention. Maybe at
some point in the future it will offer six or 12 months too...

Step-by-step Stop Google storing data forever

1

Launch Google
There are two ways of accessing Google

  • via the web (at google.com) or the search
app. Either way, ensure you are logged into
your account and tap the Settings button.

2

See an overview
Tap the option for Search activity and you
will be taken to an overview page which lets
you see and manage searches and results.
Scroll down for the Web & Activity section.

3

Stop saving activity
This section lets you do two things. You
can tap the Edit button and toggle web and
app activity off so that your information isn’t
saved. Or you can choose auto-deletion.

You can delete your search and web activity data manually
or set Google to delete it automatically over time...
