Undoubtedly a great tool for polishing tunes and showcasing
your DJ skills but, as Apple Music subscribers, our enjoyment
was a little too short-lived.

Remixing songs is a lucrative business that
can either be masterful or a piss-take. On the one
hand it can enhance and mould a mainstream track
for a more dance-orientated market; on the other it
can mean throwing all of the original aspects in the
bin and creating a track that is the same in name
only. For evidence of this, listen to the majority of
the Depeche Mode remixes. Pacemaker is a free
app that lets you tinker and adjust the components
of your favourite songs by ramping up the reverb,
tinkering with the treble, etc, and putting together
playlists in one continuous sound splurge.
The results can be very satisfying and can
be shared with an enthusiastic community
online. The main drawback, however, is that it
is very Spotify-centric with no Apple Music
compatibility at all currently. And most of the
tracks in our library were DRM-protected and

so not usable. Ultimately a Spotify subscription
is vital if you are to get enjoyment from this app.
There is, of course, a sample playlist available
for you to practise on and by toying with this
you can get a good feel for the quality of the
functions on display here. The interface is
lovely to use, with simple touch-tools for
applying effects and queuing up the next track.
Tapping the ‘+’ icon allows you to add in extra
tracks, and the app does a fine job of breaking
them down into categories so you can easily
find the style of music you want to add into
your mix.
Certainly if Apple Music was embraced then
we’d have no hesitation in recommending this
to anyone eager to add fresh zest to their music,
but as many of us can only afford one streaming
service it’s just a little too limited for many.
