6 .3 The connection to thermodynamics


This is an important section. We can now calculate the properties of a gas of weakly
interacting spinless particlesinthelimitoflowdensity. These are preciselythe con-
ditionsfor anidealgas, one whichobeysthe equation ofstatePV =RTwithT
being the thermodynamic temperature. We shall find the comforting result that our
gas also obeys this equation ofstate, althoughourTwasdefinedstatisticallyfromβ.
Hence we shall fully justifythe statisticaldefinitions oftemperature andofentropy
(see section 2.3).
Thecalculation methodsfor Boltzmann statistics canbe usedagainhere, so refer-
ence should be made back to section 2.5. The onlycaution is that the expressions for
t∗are similar but not identical for the two cases. For localized particles (2.3) hasa
factor ofN!, whereas the corresponding(5.6) for agas of indistinguishable particles
does not.

(6.6)), the quickest way toUandCVis to use Method 2 of section 2. 5. The derivation
