SEPTEMBER 2019 LA BOCA FOR FOLIO SOCIETY

Every book printed by The Folio Society has high
production values and we knew that for this one
we wanted a special slipcase to store the book in.
After confirming the text, illustration paper and
other materials with the binder, they supplied a
digital book template with the measurements of
the final book for us to work from.
The introduction to each chapter advertises
Ubik as a product – such as electrical devices,
coffee or deodorant – and so the text was
designed to be like a brand logo that could work
in different forms. A design was created for the
die-cut and applied to the slipcase template, but
it needed more solid space around the holes that
would be cut, so that it wouldn’t be flimsy and tear
when readers used it.
When the first prototype book case was
produced, the central circle on the book’s front
cover – which sprays lines out in all directions –
needed to be enlarged because the holographic
foil that the design was stamped in was filling in.
Its positioning also needed to be adjusted so that
the central circle matched the centre point of the
slipcase and couldn’t be seen through the holes
forming the letters.
We made these adjustments with a little
surprise for readers. On the inside spine of the
slipcase we’ve printed a secret message...

Julie Farquhar and Scot Bendall explain the
fine-tuning of Ubik’s deluxe slipcase...
