Pencil Sketching, 2nd Edition

Trees in the Background

Trees in the background are often
seen in groups. The different levels of
depth are therefore compressed and
the details are often lost. However,
the form and shape of trees must
not be forgotten even as they dis-
solve into the background. Use simple
lines and appropriate line width to
express these masses. Use shading
to simplify the layers of foliage, and
use dark shading and highlights to
bring out the three-dimensional quality
of the subjects in the background.
