Figure 3.4 Enabling extensions for a virtual switch in Hyper-V

Windows Server 2016 adds a new built-in extension, the Microsoft Azure VFP Switch
Extension. The Virtual Filtering Platform, originally developed for Azure, enables the
Azure-like functionality for the Windows Server 2016 network virtualization solution,
known as Software Defined Networking v2 (SDNv2). Ordinarily, without the VFP, the
Windows Server 2016 VM Switch is more of a shell, and it is the addition of the VFP
(which is implemented as a forwarding extension) when SDNv2 is enabled on the
switch that lights up most of the new 2016 features such as these:

Address virtualization for virtual networks
Virtual IP to dynamic IP translation for the software load balancer (Network
Address Translation, or NAT)
Access control lists that utilize programmable rule/flow tables enabling per packet
actions
Metering and quality of service (QoS)
Security mechanisms

The VFP performs all of the processing and acts as the brain and its own virtual switch
inside the Hyper-V VMSwitch. Figure 3.5 shows its architecture.
