Windows Server 2012 R2 also enables cross-version Live Migration. This allows a Live
Migration from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2 (but not the other
way). This Live Migration enables an upgrade from Windows Server 2012 to Windows
Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts without requiring any downtime of the virtual
machines. With Windows Server 2016, it is possible to perform cross-version Live
Migration from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016 and back to
Windows Server 2012 R2 until the VM is upgraded to version 8. This ability to move
back and forth is key to the Windows Server 2016 capability to have mixed-mode
clusters containing Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016 nodes (as
covered in Chapter 5, “Managing Hyper-V”).
