ORDER UNITS
Do you get a better deal if you order a new car instead of buying one off thelot? It depends on the demand the vehicle is commanding at the moment

and how close the dealer is to hitting any volume or stair step incentives.High-demand vehicles can usually be purchased more cheaply by ordering (^)
them, as the dealer wants to keep inventory of the hottest sellers, but wouldlove to have guaranteed business from you “in the pipeline.”
But beware of ordering vehicles that are less in demand: Mostmanufacturers don’t lock in incentives or rebates—called “price (^)
protection”—on orders, so if the deal they’re offering changes for theworse, you lose. Since few best sellers have major incentives or rebates, (^)
this usually isn’t a problem.
Also, about four times a year, the manufacturer will increase the cost oftheir models to the dealer in order to reflect the rising cost of raw materials (^)
and inflation, so an order unit may indeed have a higher actual cost thanone on the lot unless it is “price protected.” Ask what protections and lock-
ins the manufacturer offers.
