history & physical

History

■Exposure: Ingestion of food or water contaminated with cysts. Water-

borne outbreaks occur. Contaminated fingers are vehicles and cysts

recoverable under fingernails. Spread in day care centers is common;

family members are infected when child comes home.

Signs & Symptoms

■Incubation period of 1–2 weeks. Diarrhea, bloating, belching, flatu-

lence are common. Sometimes weight loss and signs of malabsorp-

tion. May or may not resolve spontaneously. No specific physical

signs.
