CONCLUSION
Postmodernist fictional strategies question our comfortable assumptions
about the past and contemporary society. They employ f(r)ictional tech-
niques to suggest alternative narratives about the world and its histories.
Building on the narrative strategies of Chapter 5, we have devised ways of
rethinking character and plot. We have also explored the way in which
postmodern strategies help us to reinvent our past and construct other
worlds. This chapter has mainly focused on longer fictions, which work
with narrative even if they partly dismantle it. Chapter 9 will explore sub-
versions of genres which are shorter, but are also postmodern fictions.
