GOING BY THE BOARD

Head to the left side of the screen to the packs. Under
instruments, we chose Rhodes under the keyboard
section. To preview the sounds, drag a style underneath the
channel rack and it opens a similar window to the one in the
image [Image C]. You can preview this by clicking on the keys.
Create a new pattern and name it appropriately to whatever
instrument you’re choosing—we named our pattern ‘keys’.
>> After this, you need to open up the piano roll, which will
give you a virtual keyboard that you can draw on to create a new
pattern. It’s similar to how the playlist window works and to add
sounds, use the pencil icon again and right-click on a block to
remove it. Once you’ve drawn your pattern, you’ll see it in the
channel rack like the other instruments in the track. If you play
the pattern, you can listen and edit live on the piano roll to hear
what the melodies sound like with your background beat.

READY TO ROLL

After some time playing around with the piano roll,
hopefully you’ll have a pattern that you’re happy with.
Ours sounds more like something from a retro video game than
a modern song, but that was a happy accident. Sometimes trial
and error can work wonders [Image D].
>> Now we need to add it to our playlist. Make sure the
correct pattern is selected and draw in your new pattern where
appropriate. We added it after four bars of our drumbeat and
also continued our drumbeat alongside this piano pattern. With
just two types of instruments, a drumbeat and a basic piano
pattern, we’ve created a retro gaming riff.
>> These tutorials are more to demonstrate how to piece things
together. But with a little practice, you could create a jingle and
eventually a full track. If you’re feeling braver than us, you could
even add your own vocals to the mix [Image E]. Anyway, we hope
you enjoyed the tutorial and have fun with FL Studio 20.

If you want to add some more sounds to Fruity
Loops, a great place to start is the official
website [ http://www.image-line.com]. This store has
plenty of loops and sample packs to check out.
Implementing these into your tracks not only
allows you to make many different songs, but can
also add depth to your beats. The majority are paid
for, but they start at relatively small amounts but
go up to large packs with lots of sounds.
You can also preview these sample packs
and loops on the website to get a feel for which
ones best suit your style, or simply to get some
inspiration. Along the top, you can choose a genre,
select whether you’d like to find loops or samples,
search, and also sort the page. The layout is vibrant
and clear, making it easy to browse through the site
and find the perfect sounds for your tracks.
