Our advice may refer to
the following features;
check out the support
articles linked below
for full instructions.

macOS RECOVERY
The Recovery system
contains tools to help
you look up info online
when macOS won’t start,
and to repair or reinstall
the system. Learn more
at bit.ly/mlrecovery.

SAFE MODE
When you start your Mac
in Safe mode, macOS
performs extra checks
and stops certain third–
party software from
running. See how to use
it at bit.ly/mlsafemode.

RESET SMC & NVRAM
These features handle
low–level functions and
store key settings for
your Mac, respectively.
Resetting them can fix
various issues described
at bit.ly/mlresetsmc and
bit.ly/mlresetnvram.

HARDWARE ISSUES
Your Mac includes tools
that check for certain
hardware issues without
going to a Genius Bar.
For Macs introduced in
June 2013 or later, see
bit.ly/mldiag, otherwise
see bit.ly/mlahwt.

Can I prevent unwanted

notifications?
I keep getting notifications from a service to which
I didn’t subscribe. How can I stop them?

Open Notification Centre by
clicking its icon at the far
right of the menu bar. Each
item lists the name and
icon of the app it’s from.
Change that app’s settings
in Apple > System Prefs >
Notifications, or possibly
controls in the app’s own
Preferences window.
Rarely, you might not
be able to associate the
notifications with a Mac
app, as it may be synced
across iCloud from an iOS

device. In that case, the
name on the notification
should correspond with
an app on that device.
You will need to alter the
relevant app’s behavior
in Settings > Notifications
there, or in the app’s own
page lower down the top
level of Settings.
If the settings to be
changed are unclear, ask
the organization responsible
for pushing the notifications
how to turn them off.

Can I add my own items

to macOS’s menu bar?

macOS doesn’t let you add your own
workflows or scripts there, but two good
utilities do: TextBar ($2.99, bit.ly/mftxtbar)
and BitBar (free, getbitbar.com). If the bar
is full, try Bartender ($15, bit.ly/mfbrtnd).

Will Automator workflows
need to be notarized?

Notarization shows Apple’s run a security
check on software from outside of the
Mac App Store. Unless you distribute apps
online, you don’t need to do it; the process
requires a developer ID (see bit.ly/mfntrz2).

Some notifications may sync over
iCloud to your iOS devices, where
you’ll need to customize them in
Settings > Notifications.

Only apps listed in System Prefs’ Notifications pane should add items to Notification Centre. That pane is
also where you configure notifications.
