Remove an icon
Click the back button to get to
Image2Icon’s initial state. Select the
Restore tab, and drag an item from
Finder to the workspace. The custom
icon will whirl away. Or you can delete
it from Get Info (Cmd+I) in Finder.
Get more creative
Text is fine, but not particularly
eye–catching. Fortunately, Image2Icon
provides additional options. You can
paste ASCII characters into the text
field, or click the smiley button to
access emoji for the basis of your icon.
Export an icon
If you want to experiment, you
might find it useful to “audition” a
number of alternative icons in Finder.
Rather than applying icons to existing
folders, click Export and save them as
Folder or ICNS for later reuse.
Add a shape
When you’ve selected your
emoji, you can also use a pre–made
background shape. Locked ones are
available via an in–app purchase, but
scroll down and you’ll see Round (Full),
iOS, Stack, and other options.
Share a JPEG
Curiously, although JPEG is
a greyed–out option when exporting
in the free version of Images2Icon,
you can get around this by sharing
your creation. Send it to Mail, and
then drag the attachment to Finder.
Work with images
You can create image–based
icons, but can’t combine text and
imagery. If you’ve already placed text
in the workspace, click the back arrow
to restore Image2Icon’s initial state,
and drag your image to the workspace.
MAKE MACOS FOLDERS
Get folders just like the ones Apple makes
You may have noticed that macOS–style folder icons are absent here. This
is because they sit behind a one–off $9.99 in–app purchase. However, you
can preview how your work would look by selecting a locked template. For
image–based icons, you get three folder options: full, centre, or dark. Text–based
icons replace full with “engrave” — a setting that doesn’t work well with emoji,
since only its shape is retained. The in–app purchase also gives you more shape
options (documents, media cases) and extra export settings.
