“Creating an image that succeeds requires the

presence and harmony of certain key elements”

Welcome to the latest issue
of Digital Photographer
magazine. If you’re a keen
photographer, I’m sure you
will have had the experience of
visiting an attractive location –
somewhere pretty with green
fields and a lovely blue sky. A
companion will, sooner or later,
ask why you’re not taking photos. Surely this scene
is worth a shot or two? But as a photographer, you
know how scenes that look good to the eye won’t
necessarily translate successfully into a photo.
Composition is everything in photography (well,
almost), and creating an image that succeeds
requires the presence and harmony of certain key
elements. In this issue, we’ve put together a guide
to composition that explores those key elements,
referring to several different genres of photography
along the way – not only landscapes. It’s something

that no photographer, no matter how experienced,
should avoid giving fresh thought to every so often.
Head to p36 of the magazine to begin reading it.
Elsewhere this issue, we’ve got a guide to working
with aperture, written by Lee Frost, which you can
find on p50 of the magazine, and a look at ways to
get the best out of Lightroom before moving into
Photoshop, which begins on p64.
As ever, we’ve also got our reader gallery, pro
interview, pro column, career guide and expert
camera reviews. This issue’s group test pits Canon
and Nikon mirrorless cameras against each other,
while our main camera review tests the Canon EOS
250D. We’ve also got a roundup of accessories that
will appeal to photography enthusiasts, and the print
and share page looks at how to ensure you have the
best possible website for your images.
