DSLRs vs MIRRORLESS

FEATURES

There’s very little to choose between the
EOS R and 6D Mk II for noise and
dynamic range

It’s certainly slim and lightweight for a full-frame camera,

but feels a little lacking in features

The thinner RP has a smaller

slimness and smallness of the body
also makes handling feel a little
awkward with RF lenses, most of
which are comparatively large and

a handful, in a good way. The RP
also loses the info screen from the
top panel, and many of the direct-
access controls for shooting

parameters that are featured in the
competing DSLR.

4K video but, as with the 250D and
M50 APS-Cs, there’s a crop factor

The camera is

The RP is svelte but

Full-frame Canon DSLR or mirrorless cameras have a distinct advantage over their APS-C
format competitors when you want a shallow depth of field

DEFOCUSED DELIGHTS

hereas APS-C format cameras can boost
your effective telephoto reach, full-frame is
better when you want a tight depth of field.
With no 1.6x crop factor, the ‘actual’ rather than
‘effective’ focal length can result in a much
shallower zone of focus. For example, shooting with
a 50mm lens on an APS-C camera gives a similar
effective focal length as using an 85mm lens on a
full-frame body, but is much more effective for
blurring the background.

Be more shallow with full-frame APS-C: 50mm f/1.8 FULL-FRAME: 85mm f/1.8
