DSLRs vs MIRRORLESS

FEATURES

Signal to noise ratio is on a par with the
lower-megapixel EOS RP but the 5D Mk
IV has a bit more Raw dynamic range

DUAL PIXEL PERFORMANCE

Like a dual carriageway for autofocus, Canon brings a speed boost

here’s a fundamental difference in the
way that DSLR and mirrorless digital
cameras autofocus. The reflex mirror
of an DSLR directs the image produced by the
lens to a dedicated phase-detection AF module,
as well as up into the viewfinder. This can work
out whether the lens’s focus distance is too
long or too short, and make the adjustments.
For mirrorless cameras, or when using an
DSLR in ‘live view’ or movie capture mode,

contrast-detection autofocus is the traditional
alternative. This adjusts the lens’s focus until
the greatest amount of contrast is registered
at a defined point or area in the scene.
All of Canon’s DSLR and mirrorless cameras
in this test group feature revolutionary Dual
Pixel AF. Each ‘pixel’ on the image sensor is
divided into a pair of photodiodes, enabling
phase-detection autofocus with excellent speed
and accuracy.

As usual, the Dual Pixel AF
system enables phase-detection
autofocus points across most of the
frame, in this case 5,565 of them.

slimmer and lighter than the 5D

major difference between the two
cameras is that the EOS R has

As with the EOS RP, an adapter is
also provided in retail kits, for
using EF and EF-S lenses.
