FANTASTIC CANON PHOTOGRAPHY

(^05) LOVING DUO (SHORTLISTED: ANIMALS)

This pair of Niobe fritillaries was shot in the
French Alps. To get the high-key effect I
needed the sky to be cloudy, the subject in
shadow and the background clear. I waved
a tissue in front of the lens to create some
blurry foreground interest too.

I tried a number of compositions of
seeds hoping to create the impression of
ballerinas on a stage, but coltsfoot worked
the best as they are so delicate and light.
I had to spray them with water to keep
them still and stop them from flying away.

I focus stacked 46 separate frames to get
the snowflake totally sharp. I also cleaned
up the background in Photoshop to make it
totally black, removing some of the fibres
from the dark mitten it was resting on.
