VIEWFINDER 101

School tip Improve the view(finder)
How to fine-tune the focus of the viewfinder image

IF THE image you see in the viewfinder
looks soft despite the lens being in
focus, don’t assume there’s something
wrong with your camera; the viewfinder
display might need to be refocused.
The majority of EOS cameras feature a
diopter adjustment which you can use
to tailor the display to your eyesight.
It’s easy to do this with an EVF:
activate the main menu and adjust the

diopter until the menu text is sharp.
You’re unable to view the menu in an
optical viewfinder, but rather than
looking at the image in the viewfinder,
use the readout at the bottom or the AF
point overlay as a guide while making
adjustments. It can be a bit fiddly to
access the diopter wheel, so remove
the rubber eyecup by squeezing it at
the sides and pulling it upwards.

he Live View feed
can be streamed to
another device
either wirelessly or using a
cable, depending on which
camera you’re using.
For instance, you can use an
HDMI cable to connect your
camera to a TV in order to
mirror the Live View display or

play back your images. You
can also do the same with a
portable monitor/recorder,
such as the Atomos Ninja.
Designed primarily for video
recording, these devices can
be attached to the camera’s
hotshoe and allow movie clips
to be monitored and saved
easily on location.

Canon’s EOS Utility software
is compatible with both cables
and Wi-Fi, allowing you to
access Live View and remotely
control a camera that’s
connected to your computer.
Not only that, but images can
be saved automatically to your
computer and opened in Digital
Photo Professional software,

where you can start editing
them while you shoot.
For location shooting,
Canon’s Camera Connect app
provides a more convenient
way to view the Live View feed
from a Wi-Fi-enabled camera.
You can even manually
touch-up the focus, but the
lens needs to be set to AF.

Tethering a tripod-
mounted camera to a
computer is convenient
when you’re shooting a
range of subjects using the
same setup, as it’s easier
to check the composition
and manually focus
