Why does the Image Stabilizer stay

active the whole time that my EOS RP is
actually turned on?
John Graham, Quorn

BRIAN SAYS... This is the
correct behaviour and is
described in the manual.
The exact reason is not clear
to me, DSLR cameras only
activate the stabilization
unit when the shutter is
half-pressed. Having the
stabilizer continuously active
ensures the LCD and EVF
displays are stabilized, plus
the AF system will be able to
operate more effectively.

If you don’t want the
stabilizer on, and want to
preserve battery life, you can
turn the Image Stabilizer off
with the switch on the side of
the lens. The same behaviour
happens with the RF lenses,
plus EF and EF-S lenses on the
mount adapter. IS assemblies
are designed for long life,
so there shouldn’t be any
premature failing of the IS
unit due to continuous use.

BRIAN SAYS... If the
exposure changes as you
zoom, your lens has a
variable aperture. It’s written
in the lens name as f/3.5-5.6;
at the widest zoom the
aperture will be f/3.5 and
when zoomed in it’s f/5.6.
The change in the lens
aperture reduces the light
through the lens. If you are
using TV, with a fixed ISO
you need to watch for the
aperture display to flash; if it
does, then correct exposure
is not possible for your
chosen shutter speed.
Activate safety shift in the
camera custom functions, so
the body overrides the ISO.
For manual exposure your
camera has an additional

feature to maintain the same
exposure for new apertures.
It works by overriding your
selected ISO if the exposure
changes as you zoom, add an
extender or change lens. You
will need to keep the camera
switched on when changing
lenses for this to work.

Can you tell me how to avoid
underexposed shots in Manual or Shutter

P r ior i t y ( Tv) w hen I z oom m y len s?
George Martin, Rainham

EOS R mirrorless cameras continuously operate a lens’s Image
Stabilizer by default when the body is switched on

EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 tweaks
aperture as you zoom – set the
body to auto override the ISO
when using TV with safety shift

Cameras can be set to override selected ISOs in Manual mode if
needed as a result of zooming or changing the lens
