Lord Baddesley (3.40 Plumpton)
The Chris Gordon-trained seven-year-
old has been crying out for this step
up in trip and his penultimate effort,
when a staying-on fourth in the
Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, is easily
the best bit of form on offer. Things
didn’t pan out for him last time and
he can win at the main expense of
Bourbali.

I believe in

a protected

female

category

The guidance that was released last
year by the Sports Council Equality
Group, which includes UK Sport,
concluded that “for many sports, the
inclusion of transgender people,
fairness and safety cannot co-exist in
a single competitive model”. So what
is a sport’s priority? For elite sport,
either you prioritise inclusion or
fairness — you cannot prioritise both.
Testosterone suppression does not
make it a fair competition. It is plain
to see the physical differences
between men and women. Reducing
testosterone levels is just a tiny part
of it and doesn’t negate the effects of
puberty on the male body. A female is
not just her testosterone levels. We
are more than that.
It seems to me that the governing
bodies of some sports could be on
the wrong side of this argument and
are not looking after 50 per cent of
their membership.
There are ways to achieve inclusion
in grassroots sport. I would like
people to be able to live however they
choose to live and identify as
whatever and whoever they want to,
but, in elite sport, I still believe in a
female category. There is a reason
why a protected category for
women’s sport was created, the same
as for different age groups and
different disabilities.
I believe the best way forward is to

have a female category and an open
category, and the female category
cannot be opened up to anyone who
wasn’t born female. The open
category would be a safe space for
everybody, whatever their gender,
and wouldn’t inhibit anyone’s rights.
But it would protect women’s sport.
I sense there is disappointment that
some governing bodies haven’t
worked to protect women’s sport
better. Whether or not trans athletes
are winning is irrelevant. If you take
the situation with the swimmer Lia
Thomas at the NCAA championships
in the US last month, there are

trope of the predatory trans woman
lurking in the shadows of changing
rooms or bathrooms.
Emily Bridges isn’t a threat to
women’s sport and she isn’t cheating
anyone out of their place. She’s
making her way into womanhood
through a different path, which is
incredibly difficult even when you
negotiate it in private, so to do so in
the glare of all the attention she is
under is remarkable.
Even more commendable, she is
participating in research to provide
the data that everyone is so desperate
to pore over and base their sporting
regulations on. No more feelings,
concerns, prejudices and ideology;
just actual numbers that can be
verified. So far they show her power
outputs have reduced significantly
and are now in the female range.
Same for haemoglobin — so that

have made the mistake of reading
another dreadful story that redu-
ces trans women down to their
DNA again. I wonder why it is
even called a debate. It never is,
at least not a two-sided one. No
balance. No empathy.
This is the toxic environment
Emily Bridges finds herself in —
endless talk about trans women
invading sport, taking girls’ places,
erasing them, denying them a future.
Framed as concerns, fairness, safety.
Eventually it reaches the ridiculous

scholarships, places on teams, in
finals, on the podium at stake for
female athletes. The ripple effects of
one trans woman competing are huge.
People are asking: why are athletes
so quiet on this subject? What worries
me the most is whether they are
being gagged and whether they are
being allowed to speak freely on this
subject. If not, why not?
There is a history of women not
being able to speak up. We are where
we are now because women have
had to fight for their position. It
seems again that women are being
gagged — they may be being
discouraged from speaking out
against their governing bodies, or
afraid of being abused online.
There is an attitude of “deal with
it and shut up”. Decisions are being
made by men. I find that frightening
and a dangerous precedent to set.

Stephen Park, the performance
director at British Cycling,
yesterday described the
transgender debate as the “single
biggest issue for Olympic sport”.
“It’s important to have the
discussion and to
understand the
challenges sport
faces,” he said.
Park was speaking
24 hours after the
multiple Olympic
champion Laura Kenny,
inset, had withdrawn
from yesterday’s omnium at
the national championships in
Derby. Sources have told The
Sunday Times that female riders
were discussing taking some form
of action had Emily Bridges, the
transgender cyclist, been allowed
to race, amid reports of a boycott.

The riders were said to be afraid to
speak to the media, worried that
expressing concerns around
fairness could lead to accusations
of being transphobic. On Friday
Kenny’s representatives said
she had no intention
of discussing the
issue publicly.
How the riders may
respond if Bridges
is drafted into the
British women’s elite
programme remains to
be seen. If the UCI, the
sport’s world governing
body, does not issue a ban, British
Cycling may be forced to select
Bridges as a female rider as a legal
requirement under the Equality
Act. Insiders nevertheless suspect
that objections could surface from
within the women’s team.
