grandmother,ZelmaCrunkleton,of Spring-
field,Missouri.
Art enrolledat SouthwestMissouriState
Collegein Springfield,Missouriand immedi-
atelywas electedfreshmanclasspresident,
and soonbecamepresidentof his fraternity.
He was afriendto everyonehe knewand
therewas alwayslots of laughterwhenhe
was around.Besidesthe fun, Art excelled
in ROTC whileworkinghis wayfull-time
throughcollege,earningaB.A. in business.
Mostimportantly,atSouthwestMissouri
State,Art met his futurewife,Annabelle,the
love of his life.They marriedas he entered
his senioryear of college.
Aftercollege,Art becameaU.S.Army officer
and an AirborneRanger.Helaterbecame
the AssistantDirectorof the FloridaRang-
er Camp.Hewas deployedoverseastwice,
to SouthKorea and Vietnam.He taughtat
The Commandand General StaffCollegein
Ft. Leavenworth,Kansas,and led abattal-
ion at Ft. LeonardWood, Missouri.In 1975,
Art’scareerbroughthim to the Pentagon,

wherehe servedin variouspositionsfor
eightyears.
Duringhis 26 yearsof distinguishedmilitary
service,Art was awardedaBronzeStar with
a“V” for “Valor,” the RepublicArmedForces
HonorMedalFirstClass,and the Vietnam-
ese Crossof Gallantrywith SilverStar,along
with anumberof othermedalsand honors.
Uponretirement,Art becameamanagerfor
JBG SmithCompanyin the NorthernVirginia
area,managinganumberof shoppingcen-
ters includingCrystalCity Underground.He
was fondlyknownas “TheMayorof Crystal
City.”
Art was an avid reader,loved to play the gui-
tar and sing folk songs,learnedto sail with
Ann at age 50, thensailedthe Chesapeake
Bay togetheron weekendsand vacations
for 15 yearson their34-footsailboat.After
yearsof sailing,Art learnedto play golf in
his late 60’sand shotahole-in-onein his
late 70’s. However,with two greatcareers
and manydifferentinterests,Art’sgreatest
passionin life was alwaysfamily.Hewas a
role-modelto all in his devotionto family.
Art was precededin deathby Ann in August
2018,after64 yearsof wonderfulmarriage.

(Cathy),and two grandchildrenwho brought
him greatdelight—Kyle Masseyand Elis-

Mt. Rainier/Brentwoodarea of Maryland.At
19, he studiedfor ayear on ascholarship
at the Corcoran GallerySchoolof Art.He
was employedas anewspaperartistat the
old WashingtonTimes-Herald,andwhen
his fatherbecameill, he took overhis work
draftingpatentsfor apatentattorneyat $3 a
job.Hesupplementedthis workplayingthe
pianoin aband for $3 agig ($6 if they played
on NewYear’sEve).
The day afterJapan attackedPearlHarbor

on December7, 1941,he quit his job to join
theNavy,volunteeringasanavalaviator.
As aF4U Corsairfighter-bomberpilot in the
Pacific,heflew almost100 missionsoff the
aircraft carrierYorktownCV-10. He received
the Air Medalfor downingan enemyaircraft
duringarescuemissionfor one of his fellow
pilots.
Duringthe Korean War, Hennesyflew on ac-
tive duty for two yearsin the Mediterranean.
He remainedwiththe NavalReservesand
retiredas aCommander.After the war he
workedfor the U.S. Departmentof Energy
(thenknownastheAtomicEnergyCommis-
sion),as Directorof Manpowerand Manage-
ment,but spentmosteveningspursuinghis
true passion,painting.
In 1972he andhis latewife,Elizabeth,
builtahomeand studioin Clifton,where
he workedand becameawell-knownand
respectedartist. His paintingshavebeen
exhibitedat the BaltimoreMuseumof Art,
GeorgiaMuseumof Art, the Corcoran and
the Smithsonian,and are displayedin nu-
merouspublicand privatecollections,in-
cludingThe Houseof Representativesand
the StateDepartment.
Gerald is predeceasedby his wife,and four
of his children,Michael,Kathleen,Paul, and
Brian,and is survivedby threesons,Shawn
(wifeTheresa),Hugh,and Craig (wifeEmma);
fourgrandchildren,Thomas,Elizabeth,Mi-
chael,and Timothy;and two greatgrand-
children,Felix and Oliver.
Gerald will be interredin ArlingtonNational
Cemetery,atadate and timeto be deter-
mined.In lieu of flowers,well-wisherscan
contributeto the USS YorktownCV-10 Asso-
ciation.

telligenceAgency.Hewas bornin Jamaica

and was acum laudegraduateof Brooklyn
College,wherehe majoredin economics.
He thenobtainedamaster’sdegreefrom
McGillUniversityand adoctorate fromCo-
lumbiaUniversity,both in economics.From
1966to1974,Mr. McLeodwas amember
of the facultyof TempleUniversity,asan
assistant professorof economics from
1966 to 1970and as an associateprofessor
of economicsfrom 1970 to 1974.In 1974,
he joinedthe Central IntelligenceAgency
wherehe analyzedinternationaleconomic
issues,includingthoserelatingto sub-Sa-
haran Africa.He was also amemberof the
AmericanEconomicAssociationandthe
ColumbiaUniversityClub of Washington,DC.

off the ChesapeakeBay.They enjoyedgreat
friendshipswhilewatchingthe tides,crab-
bingoff theirpier and takingin the abundant
wildlifearoundthem.Whentheyweren’t
travelingto visittheirgrandchildren,they
enjoyedtouringEuropeandhavevisited
all 50 states.Theymovedto Charlottein
2017 to be closerto theirdaughter.Barbara
lovedjazzmusicandmid-centurymodern
architecture,especiallyFrankLloydWright
homes,whichshe visitedmany.She wasan
avidWashingtonsportsfan rootingfor both
the baseballand footballteams.Barbarawas
activein her children’sactivities,working
to foundRomperCollegeKindergartenin
MarylandCity,leadingBrownieand Girl Scout
Troopsandhelpingwithclassroomparties
andfieldtrips.She usedher expertseam-
stressskillson costumes,promdressesand
hergrandchildren’sclothes.Barbarawas
alsoan excellentcookand has passeddown
manyrecipesto her family.

pentryto his craft. He met the love of his
life,Bernardina,through anotherItalian

togethertheysettledin ReggioCalabriato
raise afamily.In1967, witheconomicop-
portunitieslimited,the familyemigratedto
the UnitedStates,settlingin the suburbsof
Washington,DC.Ignazio was immediately
employedby acraftsmanfine cabinetmak-
ing businesswherehe workedfor his entire
careercreatingmanybeautifulpiecesthat
occupyhomes,offices,and publicspacesin
the DC metroarea.Throughouthis life he
was an enthusiasticsportsfan wholoved
SerieAsoccer,bicycleracing,FormulaOne
and NFL football. He wasan avidfisher-
manand beachgoer,lovingnothingmore
thanto spendsummersat his OceanCity
Marylandcondowithhis wifeand aclose
circleof friends.Hewas aquiet manwho
led alife baseduponbasictenetsof love,
respect,and integrity,and will be missed

OceanCity,Marylandat the beach,whereJim
impressedall withhis loveof the waterand
skill in boatingand fishing.
As abusinessman,Jim followedin his father’s
footstepsin workingin the insuranceindus-
try.HejoinedThe CIMACompaniesin 1974
and helpedto buildand growthe company
withhis partners,eventuallysellingthe com-
panyin asuccessfultransaction.Jim retired
in 2016and spenttimeenjoyingthe incredi-
ble life that he had built.
Withhis six-footfour-inchframe,Jim was
neverunnoticedand broughtan evenbigger
smileand warmthwithhim everywhere
