your resume, you should expect to hear the dreaded,

“Walk me throughyour resume.” Insteadof being

nervous, however, you should see this as an opportunity

to showcasesome of your strengthswhile explaining a

seeminglynegativesituation.Read on for some tips on

how to do just that.

Ditchthe usualresumeformat.The traditional

resume, in which you basically create a timelineof your

previousand current job history, is slowly going the way

of the dinosaursanyway. So, take advantage of that by

ditchingthe old school format and trying something

new. Forbes recommendsa“hybrid”approach,in

which the top of your resumeconsistsof a summary

of your qualifications and a bullet point list of“key

competencies.”The bottomhalf can then be dedicated

to the normal chronologicalmethodof job listings.This

draws the resumereader’s attentiontoward what you

have been doing,as opposedto highlightinga period of

unemployment.

Get in front of it.Insteadof nervously waiting for a

potentialemployer to ask you about your employment

gap, providean explanationin your cover letter.

This allows you to give context to the gap, as well

as a chance to put your own spin on the situation.

Rememberto stick to the facts and keep it concise, no

one likes a wordy cover letter.Additionally, don’t be

surprisedif you are forced to give this same explanation

during the interviewprocess, since sometimesrecruiters

only skim cover letters.

Add it as a jobuntoitself.Just as you mention

it in your cover letter, so you should acknowledge

your employmentgap in your resumeitself. Flex Jobs

suggestsadding“CareerBreak,”“Planned Career

Break,” or“ProfessionallyActive Career Break”

(dependingon the circumstances)right there in your

workplacehistory, along with the dates it occurred.This,

combinedwith your cover letter, serves as a cohesive

explanationfor your employmentgap and demonstrates

to hiring managersyou don’t shy away from talking

about it.

Prepare to explainyourself in your interview.

Even if you’ve already includedan explanationin your

cover letter, there is no guarantee your interviewer

has read it.So, be preparedwith a clear and concise

verbal explanationof your employmentgap when you

sit down to talk face-to-faceor over Zoom.If the gap

was due to personalreasons—illnessin your family,

completingyour education,etc.—letthe interviewer

know whateverit was that prevented you from working

Keep the educationgoing.While gaps

in employmentaren’t ideal, they’re certainly

understandable—especiallyin this day and age.

What can give you a major leg up on the competition,

however, is demonstrating a continuous desire and

effort to learn while you were out of a job. Flex Jobs

points out activities like volunteeringon a board

or taking online classes can show you’re“staying

current.” Basically, anythingyou do that’s even remotely

work-relatedand can be considered“keeping your

skills fresh”should be somethingyou bring up during

your interview.Whetherthis includesbuildingyour

professionalnetworkvia job fairs, getting certifiedin

a specificfield,or temporarily freelancing—embrace

what you’ve learnedfrom the experience and include

it as part of your interviewto show your initiativeand

professionaldrive.

Ideally, all potentialemployerswould be empathetic

to certain resume gaps, especiallyconsideringthe

tumultuouscouple of years we’ve all been through.But

even if they’re not,you can use these tips to approach

those gaps gracefullyand confidently.
