Synoptic situation
An area of low pressure over
Denmark will push a set of
fronts, followed by an occluded
front, across Britain and
Ireland bringing mostly cloudy
skies and outbreaks of rain
southeastwards. Further sets
of fronts will linger and move
across Britain and Ireland over
the next few days bringing
blustery winds and spells of
rain, sleet or snow.

LOW
S
pringtimes seem to be
sunnier. Last month set
records for the sunniest
March in Scotland and
Northern Ireland in records
dating back to 1919, and England
had its second sunniest March.
Especially sunny was north and
northwest Scotland, where it was
also so dry that wildfires broke out.
“The record-breaking sunshine
figures were largely brought on by a
very large area of high pressure that
sat over the UK for much of the
month, at times also covering much
of Europe,” said Mark McCarthy, of
the Met Office. “This brought clear
skies, mild days, but also some cool
nights and some frosts.”
Last month was also the sixth
mildest March in records going back
to 1884, and despite a cold snap at
the beginning and end of the month.
The spring sunshine is exhilarating,
as the writer and US senator Wilton
E Hall once wrote: “Science has
never drummed up quite as effective
a tranquillising agent as a sunny
spring day.”
This March brought back
memories of the Covid lockdown in
April 2020, when the long hours of
sunshine set a UK record for sunny
weather in April, with dry, warm
and calm conditions. The following
April broke the sunshine record yet
again, as the UK basked in long
stretches of sunny weather, despite
some cold spells with frosty nights;
in fact, April 2021 was cooler than
March that year, which is highly
unusual.
This April has also begun on a
cold note, with widespread frosts
and even snowfalls, but also some
glorious sunny spells. It brings to
mind The Adventures of Sherlock
Holmes (1892) by Arthur Conan
Doyle: “It was an ideal spring day, a
light blue sky, flecked with little
fleecy white clouds drifting across
from west to east. The sun was
shining very brightly, and yet there
was an exhilarating nip in the air,
which set an edge to a man’s
energy.”
Despite the cold sunshine, the
weather this week is turning cloudy,
but although it will take the chill off,
temperatures will be unexceptional.
