Wine o’clock

Vergelegen, Delaire Graff and Creation
Wines all made the top 50 of CNN’s
inaugural list of the loveliest wine
farms to visit, and we couldn’t be more
proud. Compiled from the votes of
nearly 500 prominent international
wine fundis, sommeliers and luxury
travel journalists, the idea was to
rate both the wines and the overall
experience of the locales in the final
score. Winning!

There’s no need to stop drinking red wine just because it
isn’t winter any longer, or to drink white just because you’re
eating fish. Go ahead and drink what you want to drink
when you want to drink it – the only thing you may need to
adjust slightly is the temperature of your red in spring
and summer. Ideally, the bottle should feel cool, not
cold, to your touch – and definitely not warm.
Ten minutes in an ice bucket or half an hour
in the fridge should do it: in other words,
just a slight chill to make it frais, as the
French say. Very heavily oaked wines
are always better drunk
at room temperature,
so opt for lighter
reds like Pinot Noir,
Cabernet Franc or
Nebbiolo.
