Lives remembered

RHW Coop-
er writes:
Your obitu-
ary of El-
speth Howe
(obituary,
March 23)
describes
her father,
Philip Mor-
ton Shand, as an architectural
historian. He also had a reputa-
tion as a wine connoisseur. His
1928 book A Book of French
Wines was masterly for its time.
You also say that Philip did not
exactly approve of Geoffrey as a
husband for his daughter, El-
speth and attended the wedding
reluctantly. It is interesting,
therefore, that when Geoffrey
Howe retired as an MP in 1992
he presented to the library of
the House of Commons, as was
customary, Morton Shand’s
1960 revised edition of A Book of
French Wines. The gesture
speaks well of all concerned.

Sir Christopher

Mallaby

William E
Paterson,
emeritus
director of
the Institute
for German
Studies, Uni-
versity of Bir-
mingham,
writes: Sir
Christopher Mallaby (obituary,
March 7) was a man of such for-
midable cleverness that he was
referred to as “laser brain Malla-
by” in the FCO. As an illustra-
tion of why the appellation was
merited, he told me about an as-
pect of the meeting of the Four
Allied Ambassadors in the
Kommandatura building in Ber-
lin on December 11, 1989. Sir
Christopher, a skilled linguist,
sat opposite the Soviet ambassa-
dor and read his briefing notes
upside down.
He cared deeply about UK-
German relations and in retire-
ment chaired the Centre for
British Studies at the Humboldt
University in Berlin and the
Institute for German Studies in
Birmingham. He was absolutely
fearless and he counselled me to
“only look back when the view is
good”.

Shirley Hughes

Ann Pilling
writes: Shirl-
ey Hughes
(obituary,
March 2)
was a great
encourager.
We first met
in the early
1970s when I
was a young mother. She came,
along with her co-author
Dorothy Edwards, to a
Children’s “Book Bang” I had
organised in my village. She
encouraged me to write, and
that was the beginning of a long
career.
Shirley, always artistically
dressed, rarely appeared without
a hat. My boys called her Shirley
“Thughes” and the affectionate
misnomer passed into our family
history. When asked how she got
ideas for stories, when she was
well past middle age, she smiled
and said, “Well, nowadays I have
to lurk near sandpits”.

Pat Monday writes: Thirty years
ago my then 11-year-old daugh-
ter and her class were asked to
write to someone famous. She
chose Shirley Hughes as she had
loved her stories and illustra-
tions. While classmates received
signed photos or letters from

Michael Cole
writes: I
wrote a
profile of
Tony Wal-
ton (obitu-
ary, March
10) in 1966
when his
wife Julie
Andrews
was at her zenith but he had his
greatest days as a film and
theatrical designer ahead. Two
years before their divorce, I
sensed that the relationship was
becoming distant geographical-
ly and emotionally. He didn’t
want the interview to be only
about her but every word he did
speak about Andrews was full of
pride and affection. He recalled
falling in love with her on the
train to Walton-on-Thames
when he was 12 and she was one
year younger but already a child
star. What immediately attract-
ed him were her legs, he said,
coloured a fetching brown by
stage make-up as she hurried
home after appearing in panto-
mime.

“the office of” in response, Alex
received a lovely two-page
handwritten letter in reply.
