Synoptic situation
A broad area of low pressure
will drift into northern Scotland
from the Atlantic bringing
unsettled conditions to much
of Britain and Ireland. A series
of frontal boundaries across
northern England, Scotland and
Ireland will be the focal point
for rain in the north and west,
falling as snow over the higher
ground of Scotland. Drier across
southern England and Wales.

F
og has long been a curse for
aviation. In the Second
World War, fog was
particularly bad for Allied
aircraft trying to find and
land at their home bases and led to
large numbers of crashes. The
problem became so serious that a
fog-busting system was invented
called Fido (Fog Investigation and
Dispersal Operation) and began
operating in November, 1943. Fuel
was set ablaze from pipes running
alongside runways at a rate of
100,000 gallons per hour, generating
enough heat to evaporate the water
droplets in fog and allow aircraft to
take off or land. During the war,
Fido allowed over 2,500 Allied
aircraft to land or take off from
fogbound airbases in Britain.
An earlier attempt had been made
at getting rid of fog in 1934, when
the engineer Henry Gareth
Houghton used calcium chloride
sprayed into the air. While this
chemical absorbed the water
droplets of fog and cleared the air,
unfortunately it was corrosive and
the scheme abandoned. Recently a
New Zealand company, Pyper
Vision, has used another chemical
powder to absorb moisture from fog
to clear runways. The substance is a
commercial secret but is claimed to
be environmentally safe, even for
drinking water, and does not leave
any residue. It also works at low
concentrations and is relatively
cheap, and once the powder is
dispersed in the air it cannot be
seen, touched or detected.
A drone is used to spray the
chemical which is claimed to clear
air space in the final approach to a
runway in ten minutes. More than
200 tests have been successfully
made over five years in New Zealand
and Australia, reliably clearing up
radiation fog. This type of fog
usually forms in winter when the
ground is cold enough to cool the air
and condense its moisture into fog
droplets.
Fogbound airports are particularly
troublesome in New Zealand and
the new technology has received
backing from the government’s
Airspace Integration Trials
Programme.
