Blinkered first time: Exeter 1.50 Hartland Quay.

Minella Times, who landed a memora-
ble victory in the Randox Grand
National 12 months ago when ridden by
Rachael Blackmore, will have to carry
top weight at Aintree on Saturday.
The defection yesterday of stable-
mate Chris’s Dream, who had headed
the weights, means that the Henry de
Bromhead-trained Minella Times will
now have to shoulder 11st 10lb.
He would be the first to concede
weight to all of his rivals since the
legendary Red Rum claimed the
second of his record three National
victories under 12 stones in 1974.
Minella Times is rated a 14-1 chance
by Coral, who rate Any Second Now,
who was unlucky when third 12 months
ago, and recent Cheltenham Cross-
Country winner, Delta Work, as 8-1
joint-favourites.

Chatham Street Lad was the only
other withdrawal among the top 40 in
the weights — those who were given
the most to carry and who were guar-
anteed to qualify for the world’s most
famous steeplechase.
Poker Party, who is another from the
De Bromhead stable, and Blaklion, who
finished sixth last year, now fill the final
two places in the National, which has a
maximum field of 40 runners.
Runners trained in Ireland have won
four of the past five renewals of the
National and they again dominate the
betting. The front-running mare Snow
Leopardess, a 9-1 chance from the
Charlie Longsdon yard near Chipping
Norton, is the only British runner rated
at shorter than 14-1.
The going at Aintree has been eased
to good to soft after 7.5mm of rain. That
is welcome news for Longsdon, as Snow
Leopardess does not want fast ground.

However, while she has won on
heavy ground in the past, Longsdon
does not believe that Snow Leopardess
wants conditions to be too testing.
“I just want good to soft ground,” he
said. “Everyone thinks she wants it bot-
tomless but she doesn’t. It can get too
deep. She didn’t like the [heavy] ground
at Exeter when she won last time.
“She won at Haydock on very wet
ground, and the Becher Chase at
Aintree, but it was raining on those days
and it was wet ground rather than deep
ground.”
Longsdon’s brother-in-law, Ben
Pauling, also has a National runner in
33-1 chance Kildisart. “We’ve been very
happy with his preparation,” Pauling
said. “I think he’s improved a lot since
Newbury [when fourth in the Great-
wood Gold Cup last month] and
hopefully he can show his wellbeing on
Saturday.”
