season. While receiving a boost with
the return to fitness of goalkeeper Aar-
on Ramsdale, Arsenal were missing
both first-choice full backs with injury,
meaning the unlikely duo of Cédric
Soares and Nuno Tavares slotted into
defence — a worrying time for the pair-
ing to be starting their first Premier
League match of the season together
given Palace’s strength out wide.
Wilfried Zaha, the one-time Arsenal
target, recovered from a hamstring
injury to start on the left flank for
Palace and was a constant menace for
Soares, attacking with the flair of some-
one who knew he was set for a fruitful
night. While Soares and Tavares toiled,
it was fellow defender Gabriel who
would have a calamitous eight minutes
in which he played a part in both of
Palace’s goals. First, his unfortunate
touch on Conor Gallagher’s free kick
diverted the ball onto the head of
Joachim Andersen, who nodded to
Jean-Philippe Mateta to power in.
Then he rashly attempted to inter-
cept a long ball from Andersen and,
having made minimal contact, left
Jordan Ayew free to calmly finish. It
was a damning verdict on the first half
that between the two goals, with pos-
session deep in the Arsenal half, Palace
goalkeeper Vicente Guaita shuffled

along the edge of his box in a series of
stretches, having had so little to do.
Palace’s improvement under Vieira
and the attractive style he demands of
his defenders was rewarded last week in
senior England debuts for Tyrick
Mitchell and Marc Guéhi.
While Palace’s defence was calm, it
was barely tested by a toothless Arsenal
frontline, spearheaded by Alexandre
Lacazette, who is yet to score from open
play in the league this year.
Arteta brought on Gabriel Martinelli
at half-time to invigorate the attack, in

place of Tavares. His introduction
meant Granit Xhaka, who started in
midfield, moved to left back, but it did
little to stabilise a team that looked
shaky throughout.
Zaha probed the Arsenal defence all
evening and his dancing feet were final-
ly rewarded after he was caught by
Martin Odegaard in the area, with the
referee pointing to the spot. He picked
himself up and dispatched the penalty.
Arsenal began the night looking up at
Chelsea, knowing a victory would leave
them only two points behind an

improbable third place. By the end,
even the top four looked far from a
certainty.

Any fans reading Patrick Vieira’s
programme notes before the match at
Selhurst Park may have noticed the
conspicuous absence of any mention of
his former club, Arsenal.
It is the way Vieira prefers it: he is
focused on carving out his own name in
management rather than dwelling on
the past or living off his playing career.
And on nights like this, Vieira’s growing
managerial prowess speaks for itself.
Regardless of his intentions, he could
yet play a defining role in his former
club’s season after Crystal Palace pro-
duced a dominant 3-0 victory that
dented Arsenal’s hopes of Champions
League qualification; they remain in
fifth, albeit with a game in hand on
fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
The last time these two sides met in a
2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium in
October, Arsenal were 12th and there
were questions from some sections of
the fanbase as to whether they had
hired the wrong club legend in Mikel
Arteta. This time, Arsenal fans at
Selhurst station in the hours before
kick-off spoke of a hope that their club
would score early so they could choose
the optimal moment to sing the Vieira
song, to honour their former midfield-
er, without worrying about the score.
That level of optimism did not last
long. The downside of a Monday even-
ing match meant Arsenal had watched
their north London rivals and main
competitors for Champions League
qualification, Tottenham, leapfrog
them into the top four on goal differ-
ence with a 5-1 victory over Newcastle
United — the first time they have been
in the top four under Antonio Conte.
They would receive a further blow
before kick-off as it was revealed Kier-
an Tierney would miss the match with
a knee injury. Reports suggest it could
be serious enough for the defender to be
ruled out for the remainder of the

Tierney set to miss remainder of the season after knee injury

Mikel Arteta has been
dealt a double injury
blow with fears over
Kieran Tierney and
Thomas Partey
adding to his misery
after a 3-0 defeat by
Crystal Palace that
damaged his side’s
top-four hopes (Molly
Hudson writes).
Tierney, 24, played
both games for
Scotland during the

recent international
break but
experienced pain in
his knee after
returning, which it is
understood could
end his season.
Arsenal’s final game
of the campaign is at
home to Everton on
May 22 and early
assessments indicate
that would still be too
early for Tierney’s

return to action. “He
is seeing the
specialist [today] but
the feeling that he
had wasn’t really
positive and what the
scans showed
[wasn’t] either,”
Arteta said.
Partey limped off in
the 75th minute with
a thigh injury and
Arteta fears it is a
reoccurrence of an

old problem for the
midfielder.
“I don’t know [how
bad it is] but he felt
something in the
same area that he got
injured previously,”
he added.
Arteta was furious
his team’s
performance, saying:
“It is time to accept
the criticism, put your
hands up and

apologise because
this performance was
not good enough for
this club. From the
beginning we were
not at the races.”
Patrick Vieira, the
Palace manager,
praised his side,
saying: “We wanted
to put pressure on
them and not allow
them time on the ball
and we did it well.”
