- Mark a diagonal line on wrong
side of each light print 5^1 ⁄ 2 " square
and each light, medium, or dark
print 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square. - Referring to Cut, Assemble, and
Add Border 1, Step 2, page 30, use
marked light print 5^1 ⁄ 2 " squares and
medium or dark print 5^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
to make four triangle-squares. - Mark a diagonal line perpendicular
to seam line on wrong side of two
matching Step 2 triangle-squares.
Referring to Cut, Assemble, and Add
Border 1, Step 4, use marked and
unmarked triangle-squares to make
four hourglass units. Trim each unit
to 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square including seam
allowances. - Gather five light, medium, or
dark print 4^1 ⁄ 2 × 81 ⁄ 2 " rectangles and
five sets of two matching marked
print or floral 4^1 ⁄ 2 " squares.
5. Working on a design wall, lay
out 4^1 ⁄ 2 × 81 ⁄ 2 " rectangles along top
edge of quilt center (Diagram 8).
Layer matching marked print or
floral squares atop left-hand end of
first rectangle and right-hand end
of fifth rectangle (Diagram 9).
Layer matching marked squares atop
right-hand end of first rectangle and
left-hand end of second rectangle.
Repeat to place matching marked
squares on remaining ends of second
through fifth rectangles.
6. Referring to Quilt Assembly
Diagram, page 31, repeat Step 5 to
lay out pieces along each remaining
edge of quilt center. Each rectangle
should be layered with two marked
squares (for large Flying Geese units).
7. Gather a 4^1 ⁄ 2 × 81 ⁄ 2 " rectangle and
its corresponding marked squares.
Referring to Cut, Assemble, and Add
Border 3, Step 5, page 31, make a
large Flying Geese unit (Diagram 10;
note orientation of seams). The unit
should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 × 81 ⁄ 2 " including seam
allowances. Return unit to design
wall. Repeat to make 20 large Flying
Geese units total.
- Referring to Quilt Assembly
Diagram, sew together the five
large Flying Geese units along
left-hand edge of quilt center to
make a short border 5 strip. Press
seams in one direction. The strip
should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 × 401 ⁄ 2 " including
seam allowances. Repeat with right-
hand edge to make a second short
border 5 strip. - Referring to Quilt Assembly
Diagram, join two hourglass units
and five large Flying Geese units
along top edge of quilt center to
make a long border 5 strip. Press
seams in one direction. The strip
should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 × 481 ⁄ 2 " including seam
allowances. Repeat with bottom edge
to make a second long border 5 strip. - Sew short border 5 strips to
opposite edges of quilt center. Add
long border 5 strips to remaining
edges to complete quilt top. Press all
seams toward border 4.
Finish Quilt
- Layer quilt top, batting, and
backing; baste. (For details, see
Complete Quilt, Pattern Sheet 2.) - Quilt as desired. Helen Terza
machine-quilted feather motifs in the
center and the borders, alternating
with swirl designs in borders 2 and 4. - Bind with red diagonal stripe
binding strips. (For details, see
Complete Quilt.)
